Miscellaneous Notes

Abbot Jerome announced the death on 11 May of Father Andre Brissett who had been a monk of our Abbey or twenty-seven years before his departure in 1978. Father Andre entered the novitiate in 1951 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956. He first served as procurator and teacher of history and liturgy at Saint Maur's Priory in South Onion, Kentucky. In 1960 he began a decade of pastoral work in the Bahamas, acting first as assistant at Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral in Nassau and then as pastor of five churches on various islands. During these years he was responsible for building a school, convent, chapel, church, and rectory. Upon his return to the States in 1970, Andre was assigned as associate pastor of Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes for two years and as pastor of Saint Joseph Church in Saint Joseph for three years. After completing clinical pastoral education programs at Willmar State Hospital and the Hazelden Center, he did counseling at Saint Benedict's Convent for several months and then served as subprior of the Abbey for a year. In 1978 he left the community. For the past ten years he worked as counselor of the chemically dependent in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He died of cancer of the pancreas and was buried in Essexville, Michigan. (AQ 1988)
